About the Winery

“A dream born from heritage with a single mission: to honor the true character of every grape variety.”

The Rottensteiner family is one of the oldest winemaking families in South Tyrol. For over half a century, they have carried forward the dream of grandfather Hans, who founded the winery in 1956. In those early years, he sold wines in bulk to Switzerland, laying the foundation for a legacy rooted in dedication. In the 1980s, his son Toni ushered in a new era by bottling the wines, and since 2001, grandson Hannes has continued the tradition—with a fresh vision and the same respect for the past.

From the very beginning, it has not only been the family’s own 10 hectares of vineyards that are carefully pressed, but also those of 50 regional winegrowers closely connected to the Rottensteiner family. This sustainable collaboration, passed down from generation to generation, remains the cornerstone of their quality and growth. With tireless dedication, the family honors the true character of each grape variety, with a particular focus on Bolzano’s beloved grapes: Lagrein and St. Magdalener.

Their winemaking story began many generations ago, here in this land where the vines grow on the red rock—porphyry—so characteristic of the region. The family name itself pays homage to this red stone.

Today, father Toni and son Hannes jointly lead the full operation of the winery, supported by the strong women in the family. Honesty and authenticity are their guiding values—both in life and in their work.

As Toni himself puts it:
“Wine, for me, is like a young child. You must always care for it, so it can mature to its full potential—and then be bottled with pride and joy.”
